Fort Walton Safe & Commercial Lock does two kinds of work that most locksmiths treat as sidelines. It matters if there are documents, ammunition, cash, or anything heat-sensitive, because opening methods vary in how much local heat they generate. Withholding this makes the job more dangerous and slower.

Then the container itself: make, model, and serial number, photographed from the data plate if there is one, plus a photograph of the door face and the lock. That is not bureaucracy — the manufacturer and model determine the internal architecture, the type of relocker fitted, whether replacement parts exist, and whether the job is a service call or a recovery. A technician who asks for those photographs before quoting is doing it right.

Why safes stop opening

Very little of this is dramatic, and almost none of it is the container being defeated by wear. The causes cluster.

The combination is lost or was never recorded. The most common of all. Inherited safes, safes bought used, safes set by an employee who has left, safes whose owner has died. There is nothing wrong with the container at all.

The electronic lock has lost power. A keypad safe runs on a battery, usually behind or under the keypad housing. As voltage falls, the lock stops having the current to retract a solenoid-driven bolt even while the keypad still lights and beeps. The correct first move is a fresh battery of the correct type, fitted properly, before anybody concludes the lock has failed. A great many "dead safe" calls end here.

The electronic lock has entered lockout. Most keypad locks count wrong entries and impose a penalty delay after a threshold — often several minutes, sometimes longer, and the delay resets on each further wrong attempt. A person who keeps trying is extending their own wait. If the keypad is refusing entry immediately after repeated attempts, stop and wait rather than keep pressing.

The solenoid or the motor has failed. An electronic lock retracts a blocking element electrically. That component fails like any small mechanism, and when it does the keypad may accept the code, chirp its acceptance, and do nothing. Acceptance plus no movement is the signature.

A dial safe has drifted out of calibration. Mechanical combination locks have tolerance either side of each number. As parts wear, the effective window narrows and shifts, so a combination that used to open reliably now needs the dial parked slightly off the printed number. Owners describe this as the safe "getting fussy." It is a service item — the lock can be cleaned and adjusted, and it is a warning to act before it stops entirely.

The bolt work is bound. The bolts, the linkage that drives them, and the handle form a mechanical assembly under load. If a heavy safe has been dragged, dropped, or bolted down onto a floor that is not flat, that assembly can twist enough to bind. The tell is a handle that moves partway and stops hard, with the lock itself operating normally.

A relocker has tripped. Better safes carry an internal device that fires and locks the bolt work permanently if the container is attacked or if an internal component breaks. Once fired it does not reset from outside. A relocker that has tripped is a recovery job, and afterwards the mechanism has to be reset and the fired component replaced before the safe is trustworthy again.

How an opening actually proceeds

The order is always least invasive first. Manipulation and diagnostics come before anything else — verifying the power supply, checking for lockout, confirming the dialling procedure the owner is using is the one the lock expects, examining the bolt work through the handle's behaviour. A surprising share of jobs end at this stage with nothing damaged and nothing replaced.

Where a container genuinely has to be entered, a professional opening is a controlled procedure carried out on a documented container by a technician with the ownership paperwork in hand, and it is deliberately not described in public. What you should expect to be told is: what will be affected, whether the container will still be usable afterwards, what parts will need replacing, and roughly how long it will take, all before the work begins.

Aftercare is the part owners forget to ask about. A container that has been opened by force is not secure until it has been repaired. Changing a safe combination

This is routine work, with one hard requirement: it can only be done on an open safe with the current combination working. A combination cannot be changed through a closed door. If the current combination is unknown, the sequence is opening first, then a change or a new lock.

On a mechanical dial lock, the change is done from the back of the door using a change key specific to that lock, with the container open and the bolt retracted. The overwhelmingly common failure is doing this with the door closed to "test" the new combination — if the change was not completed correctly, the safe is now locked on a combination nobody knows. Always test a new combination several times with the door standing open before closing it once.

On an electronic lock the change is done through the keypad with the door open, and the same rule applies: verify the new code repeatedly with the door open, and only then close it. Also change the factory master or programming code, which on plenty of installed safes is still the code printed in the manual.

Two habits worth adopting. Record the combination somewhere that is not inside the safe and not on a note taped to it — a sealed record with your attorney, an insurance file, or a trusted second location. And review who knows it after any staff change, since a combination held by a former employee is functionally not a combination at all.

Gun safes and residential security containers

These deserve their own note because the failure pattern differs from a commercial safe. They are usually large, thin-bodied relative to their size, and fitted with either a mechanical dial or a consumer-grade electronic lock. The three problems that generate most calls are a dead battery on the electronic lock, a dial that has drifted out of calibration through years of use, and a handle spring that has broken so the handle no longer returns to position and cannot retract the bolts.

Mounting matters more here than anywhere else. A tall container bolted to an uneven floor, or anchored at only one point, can rack slightly and bind its own bolt work. If a gun safe's handle has become progressively stiffer over months, look at how it is anchored before assuming the lock is failing.

If the door has drifted so that the plunger drops into the strike opening alongside the latch instead of resting on the face of the strike, the deadlatching function is defeated entirely and the door merely looks locked. This is worth checking on every commercial door: with the door closed, that little plunger should be held in, not sitting free.

Pivots and closers. Shopfront doors typically hang on top and bottom pivots rather than butt hinges, often with the closer buried in the floor. A door that scrapes the threshold, sits low, or has started to bind at the top rail usually has a worn bottom pivot carrying a hundred-plus pounds of glass, not a lock problem. Left alone it drags the door out of alignment until nothing latches.

Closer adjustment. Sweep speed, latch speed and backcheck are separate adjustments and each has a job. Wrong latch speed either slams the door or leaves it resting against the stop unlatched. On a shop that props its door open in the mornings, backcheck is what stops the wind taking the door into the adjacent glass.

Panic and exit hardware. Any door serving as an exit must release with a single motion from inside, with no key, no code, no thumbturn to find, and no separate second action. That requirement outranks every security concern anyone will raise. The common violations are all improvised: a padlock and hasp added inside, a chain through the push bars overnight, a secondary deadbolt fitted that is keyed both sides. If a door needs to be secured against entry outside business hours, the answer is hardware designed to do that while remaining free to exit — not something added to defeat the exit function.

Cylinders. Commercial hardware takes either a mortise cylinder that threads into the lock case, or a rim cylinder that mounts through the door with a tailpiece to the lock body. They are not interchangeable, and the correct cam or tailpiece for the specific lock is what makes the difference between a lock that operates properly and one that half-works. This is why a commercial lock is worth measuring before parts are ordered.

Master key systems and commercial rekeys

A master system exists so that one person can carry one key instead of eleven. It is designed on paper before a single cylinder is pinned: a top-level master, sublevels for departments or floors if needed, and individual change keys at the bottom that operate one door each. Every level constrains the levels below it, so the design has to anticipate expansion. Adding a wing to a building keyed without a plan usually means repinning the building.

The register is as important as the pinning. A written record of every cylinder, its keying, and every key issued to a named person, kept up to date, is what turns a system into a control. Without it you have a collection of locks and a vague memory.

Commercial rekeying is the routine maintenance of that system. Rekey when an employee with keys leaves, when a key is lost, when a contractor's temporary access ends, when a tenancy changes, and when a business changes hands — the last of these is regularly skipped, and a new owner then operates for years on locks the previous owner's staff can still open. Rekeying keeps the existing hardware and replaces only the pin combination, so it is proportionate work: no new door furniture, no new finish to match, no downtime beyond the visit.

Eviction lock changes
